Callum Smith picking Canelo to trounce Golovkin

By Dan Ambrose: Callum Smith expects Canelo Alvarez to defeat Gennadiy Golovkin in a “one-sided” fight on September 17th, and he feels sad about that.

Smith feels that Canelo (57-2-2, 39 KOs) should have fought the trilogy match against Golovkin (42-1-1, 37 KOs) shortly after their rematch in 2018.

Instead, Canelo waited until Golovkin was 40-years-old, and showed signs of age & decline before pulling the trigger on the third match.

Golovkin has looked like a shadow of his former self in his last four fights since the last time he battled Canelo in 2018.

At this point, you can argue that it’s going to be a major victory for Golovkin if he can go the full 12 rounds without getting stopped by Canelo.

Many boxing fans are predicting a knockout win for Canelo, given that Golovkin was almost stopped by body shots from Ryota Murata and Sergiy Derevyanchenko.

Yeah, which is sad, really, because the first two fights were so evenly matched, and they were both really, really good fights to watch,” said Callum Smith to Fight Hub TV when asked if he thinks Canelo Alvarez’s trilogy match against Gennadiy Golovkin will be a routine victory for the Mexican star.

The question is, did Canelo intentionally wait until Golovkin got old before fighting him again? It would appear to be the case, and it’s disappointing because Canelo is rated so highly on the pound-for-pound lists.

If Canelo is really one of the best, why did he wait four years before fighting Golovkin again? Moreover, why didn’t Canelo fight an immediate rematch with Dmitry Bivol after losing to him last May? Finally, why hasn’t Canelo fought David Benavidez yet?

“In my opinion, it’s probably one-all between them. I think the decider should have happened not long after it, and it’s been left and left to wait,” said Smith about Canelo and Golovkin.

“I think in that time’s past, Golovkin has aged a lot more than Canelo hasn’t. I think it’ll be a one-sided win for Canelo, which is sad really because I would have liked to have seen the decider a few more years ago,” said Smith.

Golovkin has aged more than the 31-year-old Canelo in the last four years, as you would expect for a fighter that is nine years older than him.
