By Chris Williams: Teofimo Lopez says Terence Crawford’s pride messed up the money he could have made fighting Errol Spence Jr for the undisputed welterweight championship.
Instead of picking up a load of cash and the chance to become the undisputed champion at 147 against IBF, WBA & WBC 147-lb champ Spence, Crawford pulled out of the negotiations without warning and signed up to fight David Avanesyan on December 10th.
Now, Crawford thinks he’s going to pick up where he left off in the negotiations with Spence after he faces Avanesyan, but it’s highly unlikely that’ll happen.
Crawford made Spence look bad and wasted his time by not telling him that he was in secret negotiations for the Avanesyan fight and then walking away.
While Crawford (38-0, 29 KOs) is getting paid well by BLK Prime for his pay-per-view fight against Avanesyan (29-3-1, 17 KOs) at the CHI Health Center in Omaha, Nebraska, that might be a one-off for him with that company.
It’s unlikely that BLK Prime is going to dump a bunch of money on Crawford for his next fight, particularly if they lose a done of dough on the Avanesyan match.
Crawford’s pride messed things up
“There’s too much ego. These guys have too much ego,” said Teofimo Lopez to Fighthype when asked who’s to blame for the Errol Spence Jr vs. Terence Crawford fight not happening.
“I don’t know who has more ego in this one. I don’t know if it’s Spence or Crawford. Crawford, I think he has too much pride. I think he’s f***ing up his own bag by doing that.
“I think he had an interview with Kate [Abdo]. I didn’t hear it or read it. All I did was read the title at the bottom, saying he doesn’t need to be undisputed at 147 because, basically, he’s done it at 140.
“I just smacked my face, ‘I don’t think you kind of get it. It’s not about doing it once. It’s about doing it multiple times so no one else can do it.’
“Look at Claressa Shields. Three times world champion in three different divisions, and the girl keeps going. It’s that type of mentality.
“So you know what? I don’t even care because these guys aren’t going to fight, obviously because they have their own reasons, their own pride, their own ego, and once I go to 147, you guys aren’t going to have that mistake,” said Teofimo.
