The future of Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green has been a topic of discussion for the last few weeks. Despite being eligible for an extension this NBA offseason, there didn’t seem to be any substantial talks between the two sides about a new contract.
Green was looking to sign a max deal, and that wasn’t something the Warriors had any interest in doing right now. They had more pressing needs, as Jordan Poole and Andrew Wiggins were both extension-eligible and received new deals over the weekend.
The writing could very well be on the wall when it comes to Green’s future with the team, as Golden State is committing major money to other players already. The incident at practice with Poole, when Green struck him, clouded his future with the franchise even more.
Green has a chance to enter free agency in 2023, as he possesses a player option for the 2023-24 season.

Opting out would enable him to sign a lucrative long-term team elsewhere, but it sounds like that isn’t in his current plans. According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, the plan, right now, is for Green to opt into his option next offseason.
“I think there is a lot of time left for the Warriors and Draymond Green to make that decision [on a contract extension], but certainly I think the opt-in on his contract next summer is probably the most likely scenario.”
If Green wants to remain in Golden State, that is the easiest way for him to achieve that. Extension talks could pick up again down the line, especially if Green continues to prove that he is an irreplaceable part of the team’s rotation.

Winning is the best deodorant and if Golden State is competing for another Larry O’Brien trophy at the end of this season, it will be difficult to part ways with Green. For his shortcomings, he has shown to be the heart and soul of the team. While more talented players could be available, replacing the intangibles, leadership and toughness Green brings could outweigh whatever talent upgrade that may be available.
