MPL Cambodia, Mobile Legends: Bang Bang’s (MLBB) regional esports league for Cambodia, has recorded 110,040 peak viewers for its Autumn Split 2022, according to data analytics platform Esports Charts.
The figure was a big increase compared to the league’s Spring Split, which managed to record a little under 77,000 peak viewers.
This is Cambodia’s second year hosting an MLBB league under the MPL branding. In total, there are seven MPL leagues — two of which (MPL Indonesia and MPL Philippines) — are franchised.
The match that drew in the biggest audience during MPL Cambodia was Logic Esports vs Burn x Team Flash, which saw the latter team walk out victorious and qualify for the M4 World Championship — MLBB’s global event taking place in January 2023.
MPL Cambodia was held at AEON Mall Sen Sok, in the country’s capital Phnom Penh, and boasted a prize pool of $40,000 (~£35,400). The event’s roster of commercial partners included the likes of TikTok, mobile operator Metfone, energy drink Sting, motorcycle manufacturer NCX Honda and instant noodles brand Indomie.
As mobile gaming continues to rise in popularity, particularly in Southeast Asia, it’s not surprising to see titles such as MLBB starting to attract big audiences in regional leagues.
So far, MPL’s most successful regional event, in terms of viewership, has been MPL Indonesia Season 9. Over 2.8m viewers tuned in to watch a match between MLBB teams RRQ Hoshi and EVOS Legends, with the clash even surpassing that season’s final by a million. MPL Philippines is also gaining more and more popularity, as it managed to record around 630,000 peak viewers during its ninth season.
Ray Ng, Esports Ecosystem Lead at MOONTON Games, commented on the viewership stats: “The viewership growth is a testament to the ever-growing community of MPL Cambodia. We thank our fans for their immense support of the league, the teams, and the players.
“Let us continue supporting the team as they begin their quest to conquer the M4 World Championship.”
