The Miami Heat have been involved in a lot of trade rumors this NBA offseason. A lot of those rumors are of the blockbuster variety, as they have been linked to All-Stars Kevin Durant of the Brooklyn Nets and Donovan Mitchell of the Utah Jazz.
Swinging big trades is nothing new to the Heat. Since Pat Riley has taken over the helm, they have transformed the team numerous times to fit star players into the roster. No matter how many hurdles needed to be jumped, the Heat would do it.
As a result, the Heat can never be counted out when it comes to acquiring a star. This offseason a lot of those trade discussions that have been held have revolved around Tyler Herro. The reigning Sixth Man of the Year is a key component in negotiations.
Lacking draft capital, Herro is the best trade chip that the Heat have unless they inexplicably make Bam Adebayo available. How seriously their trade packages are taken comes down to how the other team feels about the former Kentucky product.
LATEST NBA NEWS AND TRADE RUMORS: Miami Heat Star Tyler Herro Reveals Major Goals For 2022-23 Season
According to Zach Lowe, the opinions on Herro are vast. There may not be a player in the NBA with as big of a range as Herro, as some executives and coaches believe he can turn into that All-Star level player, while others believe he won’t amount to more than being a gunner off the bench.
“What will peak Tyler Herro look like? Ask 50 executives and coaches, and the gap between answers will be wider than for possibly any other NBA player. You hear everything from “All-Star” to “Lou Williams/Jamal Crawford 2.0” — a one-way bench scorer who will get exposed on defense in the playoffs.”
That is something a lot of people have asked themselves, and it’s tough to provide a clear answer. Herro has the tools to become an elite offensive player with his shooting ability and willingness to pass the ball. Even marginal increases in efficiency will take his game to another level.

But, to be successful at this level, you need to produce on both ends of the court. Given his physical limitations, Herro is never going to be a lockdown defender. He is one of the few players in the league with a negative wingspan, as it is shorter than his height.
That leaves him susceptible to being picked on defensively, which we have seen occur at times during the postseason. But, it isn’t for a lack of trying. Herro is an intelligent defender and he makes reads and gets in the right position, it is just easy for opponents to either bully him to get to their comfort zone or shoot right over him.
Trying to project his ceiling is what will determine if the Heat can pull off a trade for an All-Star this season. If the Jazz or Nets don’t see it, their packages won’t compare to what other teams can offer. But, if either of them believes Herro can ascend into that full-time starter, All-Star level, he could be enough as the centerpiece of a trade package.
