Oscar De La Hoya still “reaching out” to negotiate Gervonta Davis vs. Ryan Garcia says Bernard Hopkins

By Dan Ambrose: Bernard Hopkins says Oscar De La Hoya is still trying to make the fight between Ryan Garcia and Geronta ‘Tank’ Davis.

Last Saturday night, De La Hoya claimed he was giving up on attempting to put the Tank vs. Ryan fight because he hadn’t been able to speak to Gervonta’s management.

Hopkins says he’ll be “embarrassed” if the Davis-Ryan fight isn’t made within the next five months. It doesn’t help that De La Hoya was talking about his thoughts on Ryan being on the same level in negotiations.

Ryan also shot himself in the foot when he said that he wouldn’t drop back down to 135. He wanted Tank Davis to come up to 140 so the fight could happen there.

“I’ll be embarrassed if you ask me this in another five months without having nothing concrete,” said Bernard Hopkins to Fight Hub TV about the Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis vs. Ryan Garcia fight.

“We ain’t going to do the blame game here. No side is blaming the other side, but we should not break the rules in how things are supposed to be done.

“Do we negotiate as two powerful companies, or do we negotiate through the media and have the media say who’s right or wrong? This is about business. This isn’t even about egos.

“It’s up to both sides to sit down with their champions and hash it out,” said Hopkins.

“A fighter should be more vocal than the promoters will ever be,” said Bernard. “Oscar is still reaching out as much as he can do to bring two entities a super fight to the boxing world.

“It won’t because we didn’t want the fight. It’ll be because the fighter didn’t really want the fight based on it’s his life, his career. Let them deal with the business part.

“You deal with the greatness you can achieve. Until the fighter’s career is over with, they can talk about what they should have or could have did,” said Hopkins.

We don’t know how motivated Mayweather Promotions are in letting Gervonta fight the 23-year-old Ryan. If the fight doesn’t get made, there will be a lot of upset fans.
