By Barry Holbrook: Promoter Frank Warren says he’d have no problems making a fight between former WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder and the undefeated Joe Joyce if it were possible.
Warren notes that it would be a “great fight” between Joyce (14-0, 13 KOs), who is setting the division on fire, and Wilder (42-2-1, 41 KOs). If Wilder doesn’t suffer a hand injury, he might spark Joyce out because he’s too easy to hit.
Last Saturday night, boxing fans on social media were talking up the idea of a fight between Deontay and Joyce following a fourth-round knockout victory by the ‘Juggernaut” against Christian Hammer (27-10, 17 KOs) at the Wembley Arena in London, England.
Joyce walked through a number of hard right-hand shots from Hammer during the fight but dropped him four times to get the stoppage in round four.
On Twitter, fans talked of wanting to see if Joyce could take the right-hand power shots from the hard-hitting Wilder in the same way he was against Hammer.
Deontay is expected to make a comeback later this year after losing his second fight against Tyson Fury last October. There’s no word on who Deontay will be fighting for his comeback, but it’s fair to say that it WON’T be Joyce.
That’s the last guy Wilder needs to mix it up with when returns to the ring after his consecutive knockout losses to Tyson Fury.
“I’ve got no problem making that fight,” said Warren to iFL TV when asked about his thoughts on matching Joe Joyce against Deontay Wilder.
“Absolutely, no problem if it’s there and can be done, I’d love to do it. Why wouldn’t we try and do that fight? It would be a great fight. No problem.
“Of course, if it landed, but can you imagine Joe landing his [shots] on his chin. It’s not a problem. I may speak to Shelly [Finkell] about it.
“I think he’s [Wilder] coming out with a comeback fight sometime, I’m hearing, but I don’t know if it’s true, that he came come back with a comeback fight sometime in the autumn in the States.
“Joe fights on the 24th of September. We are working on opponents. We have been working on prior to the fight, hoping he was coming through, which he has done.
“We want to be in a position where we’re announcing something early next week for him, and get it and on sale. That’s what we’re looking to try and do.
“He had to get the cobwebs out of his system. He was out for a year. He had that terrible injury. He broke his, it was a complete fracture, clean break, of his wrist.
“It wasn’t like he was afraid to throw punches. He just got on with it. He had to get the rust out of his system. He got clipped, as he does in a lot of his fights during it, certainly early on in the fight and he took those shots,” said Warren about Joyce taking shots.
