Rafael Nadal Upsets Novak Djokovic in Roland Garros Quarterfinals

Rafael Nadal Winner Roland Garros

  • Rafael Nadal upset Novak Djokovic as a +175 underdog in the quarterfinals of the 2022 French Open.
  • Nadal will now face Alexander Zverev in the semifinals where the Spaniard is a heavy -300 favorite.
  • The 13-time French Open winner is also the new odds on favorite to win the tournament at -200 odds.

Rafael Nadal upset Novak Djokovic 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (4) in the quarterfinals of the 2022 French Open on Tuesday night to move closer to a record-extending 14th title at Roland Garros and a 22nd grand slam singles title.

Nadal showed no signs of the chronic foot injury that threatened his appearance in his favorite tournament and fatigue from Sunday’s 4 hours and 21 minutes 4th round battle against 9th seeded Felix Auger-Aliassime.

The Spaniard will next face third-seeded German Alex Zverev in the semifinals.

Rafa Beats Novak at +175 Odds

Nadal entered Tuesday’s quarterfinals match as the +175 betting underdog to Djokovic and closed at +190 odds. Meanwhile, Djokovic hit the betting boards a -225 and began the match as the -250 betting favorite. 78% of the tickets at BetMGM were written for Nadal but 51% of the money was wagered on Djokovic. The Spaniard prevailed.

With the win, Nadal closed the gap in his career head-to-head matchup against Djokovic at 29-30. The 59 times that these rivals have played against each other is more than any two players have played against each other in the open era. Two of those losses came at Roland Garros, including in last year’s semifinals. Nadal got his revenge on Tuesday.

Nadal will face Germany’s Alex Zverev in the semifinals. Zverev ended the 14-match unbeaten run of Carlos Alcaraz by defeating the rising Spanish tennis star 6-4, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (7). The 19-year-old Alcaraz was the -425 favorite to beat Zverev who entered the quarterfinals matchup as the +310 underdog.

Nadal is Now the Betting Favorite

Djokovic entered Tuesday’s marquee quarterfinals matchup as the +130 betting favorite to win the tournament. Nadal was just third at +450 behind Carlos Alcaraz who was listed at +200. But with both Djokovic ousted on the same day, the soon-to-be 36-year-old Nadal is now the odds on favorite to win yet another title at Roland Garros.

Nadal is the -200 betting favorite at BetMGM with Zverev and Casper Rudd the only other players to have odds shorter than +1000 at +400 and +800, respectively. Rafa is also listed at -200 at PointsBet USA with Zverev listed at a longer +475 odds there. Rudd is listed at +900 on the same online sportsbook. Nadal is at an ever shorter -225 price at Caesars Sportsbook and Bet365 USA with Zverev pegged at +450 and +400 at the two sportsbooks, respectively.

To get there, however, the Spaniard will have to get past the 3rd seeded Zverev in the semifinals and one of either Rudd, Holger Vitus Nodskov Rune, Marin Cilic, or Andre Rublev. Currently, Nadal is the -300 favorite to beat Zverev at the BetOnline App. Meanwhile, Rudd is the -200 odds on favorite to beat Rune who is priced at +175 while Rublev is the slight -130 favorite to beat Cilic who is listed at +116 odds
