By Charles Brun: Newly crowned WBC light welterweight champion Regis Prograis has a large group of fighters he wants to face following his sparkling eleventh-round knockout victory over Jose Zepeda last Saturday night in Carson, California.
To get the guys that Prograis wants, he’s going to need to wait because everyone is busy right now except for former WBC/WBO 140-lb champion Jose Ramirez (27-1, 17 KOs).
Ramirez, 30, is Prograis’ leading contender to his WBC belt, so that’s a logical option for his next fight in 2023. That’s a fight that Prograis has wanted since 2018, but it never came about.
Prograis’ wish list for his next fight:
- Josh Taylor
- Teofimo Lopez
- Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis
- Ryan Garcia
- Jose Ramirez
Prograis will likely need to settle for less than what he wants, however, because he might have scared away the top elite-level guys that he’s targeting with his dominating performance against the knockout artist Zepeda (35-3, 27 KOs) at the Dignity Health Sparks Parker in Carson.
Prograis (28-1, 24 KOs), who many boxing fans feel should still be undefeated following his questionable 12-round majority decision loss to Taylor in London, England, in 2019.
“The [Josh] Taylor thing is personal, and that’s what I want,” Prograis said to The DAZN Boxing Show.
“I feel like I’m ‘the man’ in the division right now; it’s just a personal thing.
“If I was my own manager, I don’t have to fight Taylor; I can go a bunch of different routes, I can make a lot of money from a bunch of different places,” said Prograis.
“The winner of Gervonta Davis vs. Ryan Garcia, Teofimo, Jose Ramirez,” said Prograis.
For the time being, it would be wise for Prograis to forget about WBO 140-lb champion Josh Taylor because he’s got a rematch coming up with Jack Catterall in early 2023.
Catterall had Taylor’s number in their February clash in Glasgow, Scotland. The judges gave it to Taylor by a 12 round split decision, but Catterall was seen as the winner by the boxing public.
Some would argue that the 31-year-old Taylor isn’t the same fighter he once was after absorbing a huge amount of punishment in his war with Prograis in 2019.
Former unified lightweight champion Teofimo Lopez (17-1, 13 KOs) is heading in the direction of the WBO title held by Taylor.
Teofimo hasn’t shown any interest in fighting Prograis, so a fight between them probably won’t happen.
