In the last few NBA seasons, the Houston Rockets have transitioned into a rebuilding phase. They were contenders in the Western Conference for years with Mike D’Antoni leading a veteran-laden squad, but in recent seasons, they have bottomed out and rebuilt the roster with high-upside youngsters.
However, one player that has avoided being moved in the mass exodus is Eric Gordon. He is the last remaining player from the D’Antoni era as other cornerstones such as James Harden, P.J. Tucker and Danuel House Jr. have been traded. Even recently signed players such as Christian Wood have been moved.
Outside of Gordon, Jae’Sean Tate, who is only 26 years old, is the oldest player likely to be in the team’s rotation this season. Despite going on 34 years old, the team does have pretty big plans for Gordon as they are planning on him being in the starting lineup.
While it seems counterproductive to how they have been doing things, Gordon isn’t a player that the team is in a hurry to move on from. Over at HoopsHype, they shared an update on his situation. He is someone that has drawn significant trade interest but the Rockets aren’t actively shopping.
While Houston Rockets veteran guard Eric Gordon drew trade interest around the draft, there’s no urgency to trade him currently. Houston views Gordon as an asset on the court and a veteran mentor to the young core. His $19.5 million salary can be used as part of a large trade before the deadline, and his skill set as a shooter, playmaker, and defender remains attractive enough to playoff teams that he’s expected to retain a trade market for his services.
Gordon’s diverse skill set is something that plenty of contending teams would benefit from adding to their roster. He provides scoring punch whether he is starting or coming off the bench and has been a reliable 3-point shooter throughout his career.
If a third team is needed to facilitate a deal, the Rockets could get involved with Gordon’s sizable contract. If not, they could look to trade him and acquire some more assets for themselves as teams were offering first-round picks for him during the 2022 NBA Draft.
